If you have a contested family action in New Jersey and there are issues as to custody, support, alimony or equitable distribution, you will need to complete a Case Information Statement. The Case Information Statement, known as a CIS, must be filed with a Complaint or within 20 days of the filing of an Answer or Appearance if you are a Defendant in an action. The CIS must be filed with the clerk in the county where the Complaint was filed. Failure to file a CIS may lead to a dismissal of your Complaint or Answer.
Throughout the case, you will also have a continuing duty to amend the CIS with any changes of information – address, income, etc., – and any changes must be filed with the court no later than twenty (20) days before the final hearing. The court may also prohibit a party from introducing into evidence any information not disclosed or enter another order as it deems appropriate.
